The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will forever remain within me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
