Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This action by the DNC to withhold the release regarding its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election is stunning but to be expected. Opposed to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body often functions closer to a PR firm rather than an electoral entity focused on cultivating a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Unwilling to break with the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the committee has remained under that legacy throughout this past year. Publishing the findings might have shown that the leadership actually want to promote open debate about the missteps which allowed the former president to win re-election. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there are no lessons to glean following the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a rationale reportedly given to justify concealing the analysis.

Critical Problems an Analysis Could Have Addressed

A genuine analysis worth its salt would confront key points of failure. This encompasses:

  • Voter Disengagement: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor in the close 2024 election.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The stubborn choice by a party leader to seek re-election, coupled with a very late exit, has been criticized as denying Democratic voters of open primaries.
  • Losing Touch With Everyday Americans: Amid rising costs, the campaign allegedly ceding to powerful financial backers without successfully attempting to address the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Foreign Policy Impact: The refusal to shift a policy position concerning a ongoing war reportedly led to driving away significant blocs, notably among young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Support: Polling data indicates a huge drop-off in support for the party among the youth electorate.

A Pattern of Evasion

This refusal aligns with a pattern of sidestepping difficult realities. This mirrors a dynamic in which nearly all elected Democrat in Congress went along with an incumbent's decision for seeking another term right up until a disastrous campaign event led to a change.

Meanwhile, large majorities within the party's base were repeatedly informing researchers that they did not want the incumbent to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Issues

A thorough autopsy could examine questions regarding where money went, such as the amounts were directed to high-priced advisors and ad buyers over the course of a campaign that managed to spend a colossal amount in a short period.

A Larger Implication

Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy highlights a submission to the established hierarchy responsible for a disastrous presidential campaign. The implication for the party's base – which includes millions of small donors – appears to be that they cannot have a right to understand what the insiders say they discovered based on hundreds of interviews compiled from extensive interviews.

An organization unable to publicly examine its own failings finds it difficult to escape the rut that proved so helpful to the rival party.
