London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
