What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
