As part of a joint military effort, jets from the UK and France have targeted an subterranean facility in Syria previously used by Islamic State.
The operation took place on Saturday evening in a mountainous region near the historic city of the city of Palmyra.
Laser-guided bombs were employed to destroy the access tunnels leading to the site.
“Initial indications show the site was engaged successfully,” stated a military statement.
Typhoon FGR4 combat jets carried out the airstrike, aided by a Voyager refuelling tanker to provide mid-air refuelling.
This below-ground structure is thought to have been used primarily for the stockpiling of arms and munitions.
The military confirmed the surrounding area was absent of non-combatants at the moment of the attack.
The Defence Secretary emphasized the country's resolve to work closely together with international partners” in order to prevent any re-emergence” of the militant group.
Thanks were offered to the service personnel involved in the strike, which aimed to “eliminate threatening militants who threaten our way of life.”
International forces have maintained aerial patrols over parts of Syria to prevent a potential resurgence of the extremist organization that previously ruled swathes of land in the country until 2019.
