While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
