One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur announced through social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.

The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions

Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
