The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
