Out of every adult-oriented cartoon movies I have personally viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the terror-laced finale of the explicitly bloody as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spain-based filmmaker created a dark, melancholy and often savage universe with a few small , desolate glimmers of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars appears as it stemmed from a drive to push the medium further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an attempt to convey a widespread, cross-cultural message regarding “the mutual source of each battle.”
That idea is communicated by means of a group of vividly colored bears , openly based on a popular line of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a culture centered on aggression and the war machine, numerous the bears are fixated on exterminating the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text that tells them they used to be rulers of the woods, until these creatures drove them out.
Others have not completely accepted the brainwashing, and prefer to sample substances or fornicate outdoors.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters display sexual organs and clear urges.
For a certain particularly cruel, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the war against unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and especially to dominance over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor and an obvious sociopath , and when fear overcomes his group and takes his teammates individually, he seizes progressively control on his own behalf, via progressively gory, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own nightmare, through an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a comedy,” the filmmaker said. “But then it becomes a more dramatic and sad movie. And by the end, it’s a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars commences resembling one of the most playful films by a legendary animator, which find a mischievous joy in letting animated figures swear, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a bleaker film by that same director, including ever more graphic violence , a palpable relation to the actual tragedy of battle.
In the finale, it becomes a full-on Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The fear that makes this a perfect Halloween watch starts a lot earlier than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore fans of gore, for lovers of extreme cinema who desire to see a movie they’ve never viewed until now, and can endure a story that pulls unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the finale will dig deep within you and stay with you.
