Over 50 lone child asylum seekers who vanished shortly after coming the UK and while in the care of the authorities are remain unaccounted for, based on figures gathered.
Many of the missing children came in small boats or hidden in the rear compartments of vehicles and are believed to have been abducted by criminal networks. Kent is frequently the place where they arrive.
Disclosed records has recorded 345 children going missing from their area, with 56 of those still missing.
Between 2021 and 2023, when temporary accommodations for children functioned along with other sites in different regions, 132 children disappeared from those two hotels. Among them, 108 were subsequently located but 24 are remain unaccounted for.
Between 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from reception centres for this group, with 182 found and 32 still missing.
In both cases, minors from Albania were the most numerous nationality to vanish, making up a full half the total from the facilities, 68, and in excess of one-fourth from the welcome hubs, 65.
The second and third largest nationalities to have gone missing from both places are Afghan nationals then people from Iran.
"These figures are shocking. With each figure is a frightened child who will already have experienced serious rights violations prior to coming in the UK hoping for refuge."
Legal experts highlighted that when assisting children who have fled after being trafficked whilst vanished, they see how their mental and physical health is permanently harmed by the abuse they experience during this time.
"Even a single minor to disappear signifies an abject failure of the state to shield the most vulnerable and abused in their care. These statistics are in the multiple hundreds."
Experts stated more needed to be done to locate the unaccounted youths. "Minors have not opted to disappear. These minors should be playing football in the park and preparing for their school qualifications, not working for smuggling networks in conditions we know include being chained to furniture, abused and mistreated, and disciplined by being starved of food."
In December 2023, subsequent to a protracted legal proceeding involving lone child asylum seekers disappearing from all hotels, the custom of regularly housing children in hotels was declared illegal.
As an alternative, authorities agreed to strengthen security for these children by extending the use of reception centres. Since that court ruling another 44 children have disappeared from such locations, with 10 yet to be found and 34 found.
"Once a child does disappear, the risk that they are being abused rises substantially and they are undoubtedly more vulnerable to abuse and smuggling."
