New York state AG has rolled out a recent digital platform asking locals to submit visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This action follows a shortly after a major enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale protests.
A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four citizens were arrested and detained for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Protests erupted in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," state officials declared in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and captured federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to submit that evidence with the authorities. We are pledged to assessing these accounts and investigating any legal breaches."
The form includes fields to submit visual evidence of the raid, along with a section to note geographic details. Prior to sending, individuals must mark a checkbox that states that "the attorney general may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved more than 50 government officers, happened in a well-known district of NYC where fake products and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – typically to tourists.
Videos of Tuesday's raid show multiple hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and shoving away onlookers. Crowds of locals pursued the personnel along the roads. An armored truck was noticed moving along the city streets.
In a news conference held with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democratic representative, stated that four nationals were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be detained for no reason." He clarified the persons were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he stated. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a excuse to incite violence for this administration to deploy the military to prevent unrest that they themselves caused."
Fury over the ICE raid escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the operation, as did the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, not safety. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage too.
"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and riot gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," stated the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it refrains from take into custody American nationals. However, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.
Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in New York and around the country recently.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Rallies targeting federal operations are ubiquitous as are claims of violence and abusive practices.
Most recently, a submission provided by legal entities claimed healthcare failures of women with child in ICE facilities.
