Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
