Tehran reports attacking a American military facility in Bahrain, as Iran launched missile attacks across the region in retaliation for a significant and ongoing attack targeting the nation by the United States and Israeli forces.
Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an area near the main base of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The extent of any impact is not yet known and the United States has not commented.
In other parts of the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - which all house American military installations - said they have intercepted missiles in their air space.
In Doha, Qatar's defence ministry said it had intercepted several missiles seemingly aimed at the al-Udeid air base, the biggest US military installation in the region.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement it was targeting US bases and assets as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the strikes on the Islamic Republic initiated by the US and Israel on Saturday.
That preceding assault - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far struck sites linked to the Iranian leadership, with US President Donald Trump encouraging the Iranian people to rise up against the government.
In the State of Israel, sirens were heard nationwide after the Israel Defense Forces reported it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.
The Ministry of Defence of the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that the country has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"UAE air defence systems engaged the projectiles with high efficiency and successfully intercepted a number of missiles," the statement continued.
Officials reported wreckage fell on a populated district in the capital, causing some structural damage and killing a civilian.
The US Air Force operates from the Al Dhafra base, south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
