Initial This Year's Deportation Charter Scrapped As Part of UK's Controversial Asylum Policy

The inaugural flight of 2026, intended to send back asylum seekers who arrived in the UK via dinghies has been called off, according to reports.

Detainees earmarked for the UK's 'one in, one out' scheme and who held boarding passes for a midweek departure were notified that their journey had been cancelled.

"I arrived on a vessel with around 80 individuals onboard," said one detainee whose removal was cancelled. "Ten of us were taken into custody, while seventy others were taken to hotels to have their asylum applications processed here. That doesn't seem fair. I was delighted when our tickets were called off, but the officers would not provide a reason. When I asked, they simply said, 'we can't tell you why.'"

An Unprecedented Halt for the Policy

This is believed to be the first instance a 'one in, one out' removal charter flight has been grounded, though it is not thought to be a result of court challenges.

Detainee Report Circulated Prior to Flight Halt

The charter's cancellation follows the circulation of a report on Monday, compiled by around 80 detainees held in an immigration removal centre near a major UK airport.

The account outlines grievances that while the majority of those arriving on small boats are having their asylum claims considered within the UK, a minority has been detained and issued with deportation orders. The men reportedly view their detention as "arbitrary and prejudicial."

The report states: "We are not criminals. We are people who escaped conflict, oppression, and injustice. We came to the UK with faith in fundamental freedoms, liberty, and safety. In contrast, we are detained, separated, and ignored."

Financial Implications of Charter Cancellations

When a removal flight is cancelled at short notice, the government may face penalty fees totaling many thousands of sterling to the plane provider. The exact contract terms for UK to France removal flights are not publicly known.
