Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined initialism came to light a couple of months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to care for a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it refutes everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that was originally built on peace has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
