US President Donald Trump has announced deals intended to reduce the cost of popular weight-loss medications, as pharmaceutical costs take center stage in his leadership's messaging about accessibility.
Making remarks with pharmaceutical officials at the White House, Trump unveiled arrangements with Eli Lilly and the drug manufacturer. Consumers are set to pay from $245 to $350 monthly for obesity medications like Wegovy and Eli Lilly's medication.
Several glucagon-like peptide-1 treatments, prescribed for type 2 diabetes and excess weight, are priced at over $1,000 per month in the absence of insurance or savings.
The arrangements will enhance Eli Lilly's and Novo Nordisk's access to Medicare and Medicaid, the federal healthcare programs for elderly and economically disadvantaged individuals.
Eli Lilly also stated in a release it would escape taxes for a three-year period as included in the deal with the federal government.
An estimated ten percent of Medicare enrollees will be qualified for increased access to glucagon-like peptide-1 drugs, and will only pay $50, per high-ranking government leaders.
Individuals participating in the state-federal health plan will see a rolling start date based on when states sign up to participate.
The weight-loss drugs will be offered at reduced rates on the direct-to-consumer TrumpRx, a federally operated site set to go live by next month.
