The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezing appliances in an apartment in western Austria.
The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for several months, were found on the end of last week. The cooling units were concealed behind a false wall in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.
Two men, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in June. The elder brother, a colleague of the female victim, stated to police last week that there had been an incident—but disputed intentional killing.
Speaking to reporters recently, a official for the state prosecutor stated the two suspects were being detained on "serious suspicion of homicide".
The identities of those involved have not been disclosed by law enforcement, in accordance with local legislation.
The family's disappearance was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.
Authorities stated the woman's colleague told them at the time she had embarked on an prolonged visit with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then discovered to be utilized in foreign locations on multiple occasions.
Yet when police entered the mother's apartment, her smartphone was found.
An individual also stated listening to a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and shouts of "mama" on the day the pair were believed to have vanished.
An expanded official inquiry was started, with officers finding several texts originating from the mother's device—such as a notice of quitting to her employer and texts to the 55-year-old suspect.
Authorities said a four-figure sum was also transferred to the man.
Katja Tersch informed the press on Tuesday that a rented space had been secured before the vanishing and a freezing appliance had been placed there.
The two suspects took out the appliance from the unit on the date the mother and daughter disappeared, Tersch said. And a shortly afterward, they acquired an additional appliance.
Authorities believe they think this points to the deaths were premeditated.
"The cause of death could not be determined due to the state of decomposition of the victims," the official stated.
The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—said the precise timeline is still unclear, but the victims were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a earlier inspection.
While the brothers were arrested in June, it was not until 12 November that the elder brother admitted to an incident and to hiding the bodies. He denies any murderous intent, investigators stated.
In a related development, his younger brother acknowledged a attempt to hide evidence but rejected awareness of a killing.
The pair are presently in detention before court proceedings in jails in separate locations, around 117 miles (189km) apart.
Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative declared the "suspected killing of two... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of two human lives and reveals a cruel system".
"Women and girls are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are women and girls," they added.
"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and issue affecting all of society that we must address decisively."
