In a major move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16M for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for being named the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
  • Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The contract includes that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization would also receive a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a emerging lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, placing last in the division but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Despite recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing double that brought home teammates for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The next night in the title match against the USA, he blasted a equalizing shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
