California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he noted that any determination is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

Newsom has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, using his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed a strategy to cut government money from the state and suggested suspending the power to grant CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he stated, following a this week's fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to loss of life and casualties.

Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had earlier announced he was withholding additional funds from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team said in a previous comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recent study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom commented while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
