The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
