Ten years back, Anthony Barry competed at a lower division club. Currently, he's dedicated on helping the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from athlete to trainer started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his purpose.
Barry's progression is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he developed a reputation with creative training and great man-management. His club career included top European clubs, and he held international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us for optimal success.”
Dedication, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their methods include player analysis, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. We must not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.
“There are 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”
Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. The team has secured qualification with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The fitness, the flexibility, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run as they do in club games, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”
Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. While training for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He earned his license as the best in his year, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry as part of his backroom at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that Chelsea removed most of his staff but not Barry.
His replacement with the club took over, within months, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he brought Barry over of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
