Al Gore Ponders Whether Pressure from Trump Influenced Bill Gates' Environmental Shift

The climate advocate has proposed that fear of facing pressure from Donald Trump may have driven Bill Gates to row back on his climate crisis position.

Labeling Trump as “the most corrupt president in American history”, Gore warned that the president’s endorsement of fossil fuels and withdrawal from clean power is “significantly hurting” the American economic system.

Climate Damage and Financial Consequences

In an conversation at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore remarked, “The president’s currently causing a lot of damage to the environment. Maybe the biggest harm he’s doing is to the United States itself.”

He highlighted that China is now selling eco-friendly innovations with a cumulative export value that outstrips all fossil fuel exports from the U.S., a pattern that is accelerating significantly.

Bill Gates’ Controversial Shift

The tech billionaire, formerly a prominent advocate in environmental efforts, recently argued for moving the climate crisis down the international agenda, to focus on health issues.

Gore expressed bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate again puzzled environmental experts that I know and respect.”

“Yes, the president approves. It’s possible what Gates was shooting for.”

Gore noted that after the president’s return to office, Gates fired most of his climate staffers, went to the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.

Concern Over Backlash

Gore theorized that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be fearful of being bullied by Trump. “It may be that he is genuinely concerned that Trump will bully him,” Gore stated.

Trump reacted to Gates’ reversal with praiseful social media posts.

Gore continued, “The only rave review of what he put out last week was from the president. Yes, Trump loves it. Perhaps what he intended.”

Rejecting a False Choice

Gore underscored that presenting the climate crisis and global health crisis as competing priorities is misguided.

“The notion that there is a binary choice between wellness and the environment has been roundly rejected by virtually every scientist in this field,” he stated.

“It’s literally insane that nations are forcing citizens to subsidise the destruction of part of humanity’s future.”

Gore pointed out that the Lancet published a report on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the significant wellness impacts of failing to address environmental issues.

Advocating for Smarter Investments

Instead of taking money away from environmental initiatives, Gore suggested that Gates should advocate for redirecting the massive sums spent on oil and gas support toward health and climate solutions.

“Accelerating solutions to the climate crisis is one of the single most effective ways to enhance wellness in the world,” he stated.

Supporting International Cooperation

Gore robustly defended the UN climate conference process, explaining that they achieve significant results than they are recognized for.

“These global meetings serves as a focal point for businesses and organizations that gather annually,” he said. “Many of them come up with their own deals that move things forward.”

“These international meetings is one of the principal reasons that the green transition has accelerated significantly.”

He added that businesses and nations are moving forward with innovations and implementing renewable energy and other eco-friendly projects.

Positive Progress and Generational Change

Gore highlighted what he sees as a “generational change” in the U.S., with numerous citizens turning towards environmental efforts even as the national leadership dismantles them.

He warned that Trump might face a “less obsequious” Congress following recent election defeats for Republican candidates.

“There’s a completely false view circulating that somehow we are falling behind.”

Gore commended Zohran Mamdani for his successful run for NYC leadership, noting that while he disagreed with some of his proposals, his political skills were impressively on display.

A Visual Warning at Cop30

At the conference, Gore showed attendees with a visual presentation of horrors caused by the climate crisis.

In front of a huge projection screen showing pictures of recent catastrophes exacerbated by climate change, Gore stated, “It is literally insane that we are allowing this to continue.”

He raised his voice while showing images of extreme dry spells in the rainforest, melting polar ice, and destructive storms in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Brazil, the Philippines, and the United States.

“How long are we going to do nothing and keep increasing temperatures so that these types of disasters get even worse?” he asked.

Preparing for Climate Impacts

Gore emphasized the need to prepare and prevent, but warned that if this irrational behavior continues—using the sky as an open sewer—some things will be extremely challenging to cope with.

Promoting Climate Trace

His main focus at the conference has been to advocate for the emissions mapping initiative, which tracks planet-heating emissions and air pollutants leading to health problems worldwide.

“There is great enthusiasm about these new tools,” Gore said. “We have got the tools and the deployment models. A few individuals think we lack the political will, but as I like to remind people, determination is a renewable resource.”
